A rose with its full stem, uncut, works differently from a loose flower: you have to think of the whole plant as one piece, from the top all the way down to where the stem leaves the page. The stem usually bends just slightly, never fully straight, since it carries the weight of the flower and settles a little toward the side the bloom leans on. Before coloring, trace that curve with your eyes from end to end, so the color follows the shape instead of cutting it into separate pieces. The leaves branching off the stem tend to point in different directions from each other, so it helps to handle them one at a time rather than as a single even block.
