When the bell rings, the teacher already has the notebooks stacked on her desk and the board ready with the day's activity. She walks between the rows of desks, rests a hand on a shoulder here and there, and asks if anyone needs help with the exercise. She hands out colored chalk to finish a drawing on the board, then reads a story out loud, changing her voice for each character who speaks. During recess, she straightens the books in the classroom library and sets up the sheet for the next lesson. When someone gets distracted looking out the window, she walks over slowly and invites them back to the activity with a gentle question.
