At dusk, the forest goes almost silent and the birch stands alone among slender trunks that fade into the background. Its high branches barely stir in the cold wind, and small leaves tremble before settling still again. Snow all around muffles any sound, so even the crack of a breaking branch carries clearly. You can picture the cold air while choosing colors: silvery and white tones for the trunk, and muted or almost gray greens for the leaves that hold on through winter. Try leaving some areas of the background nearly bare, as if fog were covering them, so the tree in front stands out. If you like contrast, add a very soft blue to the shadows falling across the snow.
