The cypress stands tall and narrow, much taller than it is wide, marking a straight edge along the garden path. When the wind moves through its tightly packed branches, a low murmur rises, one that barely registers unless you stop to listen. Along the sides, hedges trimmed into even shapes follow the row of trees up to a stone fountain that drips without stopping. At midday, the cypress casts only a thin line of shade across the path, but by evening that shadow stretches much farther, approaching the flower bed on the other side. A small bird darts in and out of the thickest branches, moving so fast it is hard to catch sight of it. For this page, try light and dark shades of green to mark the different parts of the foliage.
