At midday the air shimmers over the sand and everything looks still, but as soon as the sun goes down the desert changes completely: the heat fades fast and a cold arrives that catches newcomers off guard. The dunes shift shape little by little, pushed by a wind that carries fine grains and traces ripples across the surface. During the day there is hardly any movement, since many animals stay underground or in the shade of a rock, only coming out toward evening to look for food. The sky, almost always free of clouds, fills with stars as soon as darkness falls. To color this page, try warm shades for the sand and leave the sky however you like it best.
