Surrounded by water on every side, an island can only be reached by boat or by plane, never on foot. Palm trees lean with the wind near the shore, and their leaves make a particular sound when they all move together. Inland, many islands hold raised ground covered in thick vegetation, while the coast usually has sandy beaches where the waves break. Fishermen head out early in small boats and return before evening with whatever they caught. Since the sea surrounds it completely, the weather changes fast: a clear sky can fill with clouds in a short while.
