Early in the morning, the sidewalk under the jacaranda is covered with petals that fell overnight, so many that they almost hide the paving stones. Passing cars stir up a breeze that sends a few flying toward the curb, while others stay stuck to the ground after the previous day's rain. The branches spread out quite far on both sides, which is why the shade reaches partway across the sidewalk on the opposite side by midday. A street sweeper comes by now and then with a wide broom, piles the petals into mounds, and leaves them waiting for the next morning's truck.
