The bell in the square marks the hours and everyone in town hears it, wherever they are, since the streets aren't long enough for the sound to get lost. The houses are usually just one story, with inner courtyards and flowerpots on the windows, and the cobblestone streets sound different underfoot depending on the shoes. In the main square there are benches under the trees where people sit and chat on their way to the store or the bakery. On Saturdays a market sets up with stalls of vegetables, cheese, and freshly baked bread, and neighbors greet each other by name since they already know one another.
