To reach the tree house, you first climb a ladder of boards nailed to the trunk, one above the other, spaced a little apart. Each step creaks differently, and you have to hold tight to the rope on the side whenever the wind makes the branches sway. Inside there is just enough room to sit on the wooden floor and look out through a window cut into the wall, from where you can see the whole yard and the tops of the neighboring trees. When it rains, the drops hit the tin roof and make a steady sound that carries all the way down. It feels like a place of your own, away from the ground.
