Guess the Sound: the listening game

A sound plays and you pick the picture of what makes it. It is the only game on the site played with your ears instead of your eyes: there is nothing to read, so children can play on their own from a very young age. There are 80 sounds across eight categories, from farm animals to everything mixed together.
Each game is ten rounds. The first three show three options and then it moves to four, so the game gets harder as it goes. There are two modes: hear a sound and pick the picture, or look at a picture and find which speaker matches it.
What children practise while playing
- Auditory discrimination: telling one sound from a similar one, which is the base for later telling similar letter sounds apart.
- Vocabulary: every correct answer ends with a voice naming what was heard, in the site language.
- Sustained attention: you have to listen to the whole clip before deciding, and you can replay it as often as needed.
- Auditory memory: in "Find the sound" mode you have to remember the speakers you already heard in order to compare them.
The game is free, asks for no sign-up and works on computer, tablet and phone. If you use it in class, check the volume first: the whole game depends on being able to hear clearly.

Do you need to read to play?
No. You hear the sound and tap the picture. Names appear under each picture, but they are a bonus: the whole game can be finished without reading a word.
What happens if the child gets it wrong?
They do not lose or get locked out: the chosen picture flashes red for a moment and the round stays open to listen again and try once more.
Can you play without sound?
No, this game needs sound. With the speaker muted there is nothing to guess; check the site's sound button, at the top right, before starting.
