Autumn pumpkins sit on the ground among dry leaves and vines, their surfaces lined with ridges running from top to bottom. Some have a thick, curved stem, others a shorter, straighter one, and no two ever turn out quite the same. To the touch, the skin feels firm and a little cool in the morning, warming up once the sun starts hitting it directly. They tend to cluster together in a corner of the garden, leaning against one another, forming small mounds among the wilted plants. As the days go by, some start showing darker patches near the stem.
