A crab walks sideways across the sand, moving its legs in quick, short steps that leave a trail of tiny holes behind it. When something startles it, it stops short and raises its claws as if ready to defend itself, then rushes for the shade of a rock or digs into the wet sand until only its eyes poke out. It likes to explore among the stones when the tide goes out, checking every gap for something to eat, and sometimes two crabs cross paths and tap claws before each goes on its way. Its rounded shell protects a body that moves quickly from side to side.
