In the water it's a different story: it darts along quickly, twisting and leaping through the waves. Before diving in, it often pauses at the edge of the ice, as if judging the jump. Penguins recognize each other by a particular call, repeating it again and again until they find one another in the middle of the group. They huddle close together for shelter from the wind, pressed side by side.
