A walrus spends much of the day lying on the ice or rocks, piled together with other walruses in a tight group that barely moves. When it decides to go into the water, it slides in clumsily at first and then swims with a completely different ease, swinging its whole body from side to side. It uses its long tusks to prop itself up and climb out of the water, digging them into the ice like two poles that help it climb. Underwater, its thick, stiff whiskers help it feel along the bottom and find food hidden among the stones, even without seeing well. Its skin is thick and wrinkled, with folds that show more around the neck and legs.
