Wind moves the branches of the apple tree and the apples sway slowly, knocking against each other with a soft thud. The leaves around them have slightly jagged edges and turn on their stems when the wind picks up, letting light through at different angles depending on the time of day. Birds land for a while on the thicker branches, peck at the ripe fruit, and then fly off toward another tree nearby. To pick one, someone cups the apple in a full hand and twists it gently until it separates from the branch without tearing off the little stem.
