To serve a whole tropical pineapple, someone lays it on its side on the cutting board and slices it into even rounds before removing the tougher center with a round cutter. Each slice ends up as a neat yellow ring with a hole in the middle, ready to stack on a plate or thread onto a skewer with other fruit. The plant grows low to the ground, with long, sharp-edged leaves spreading out in a star shape around the central stem. Before the fruit is ready, a small flower appears at the center of those leaves and later gives way to the fruit people know.
