The duckling glides across the water, leaving an even ripple trail behind it while its feet paddle steadily beneath the surface, out of sight. Every so often it flaps its still-short wings and splashes a little around itself. It pauses near some floating leaves to peck at something among them, then keeps swimming in loops, as if exploring every corner of the pond. When a shadow passes overhead, it freezes for a moment, alert, before quickly returning to its calm route. It likes drifting close to the bank, shaking the water off its body, and slipping right back in.
