When the wind blows hard, the pirate ship leans to one side, its sails full and the ropes stretched tight from one end of the deck to the other. Wood creaks each time a wave hits the hull, and spray reaches all the way to the bow. The flag atop the mast flaps without stopping, while the crew moves back and forth adjusting sails and checking the course. At night, a lantern hangs near the wheel so whoever is steering can see the way through the darkness. Sometimes the ship passes close to sharp rocks poking out of the water, and it takes careful steering to avoid them. When the sea calms down, the crew takes the chance to rest on deck and look at the horizon.
