With his other eye closed, he slowly scans the line where the sky meets the sea, looking for any shape that should not be there. The wind tugs at his clothes and hat, and he has to hold on to a nearby rope with his free hand to keep his balance. When he spots something, he stays still for a moment, watching closely before letting the rest of the crew know. Then he lowers the spyglass slowly, closes it with a firm motion, and tucks it under his arm or into his belt. Sunlight often catches the metal of the spyglass, so it needs to be moved with care.
