An anchor usually spends most of its time in silence, resting on the deck or hanging by the side of the ship, waiting for the moment it gets lowered. When it drops, the chain makes a metallic sound that echoes across the dock, link after link, until it reaches the bottom. There it stays still among the sand and stones, while small fish come close to look around its curved arms. Over time it can gather seaweed and tiny snails that cling to its surface. Sailors check it before heading out, making sure the chain is coiled properly and ready to use. When it is time to set sail again, they pull it up slowly, dripping water, until it settles back into place at the bow.
